A background to Dunlop work with covers and shade for cocoa

Shade plants not only protect cocoa from exposure to sun and wind but also influence soil texture, water and aeration. These soil factors affect the rooting of cocoa, and are important at all stages of the plant's life. Many influences must be considered when choosing shade plant species and when deciding upon the quantity and quality of shade needed for different ages of cocoa. With this in mind, Dunlop work on shade plants in the establishment of cocoa on inland alluvial soils in West Malaysia is reviewed
