Phenology of Conostegia oerstediana and C xalapensis (Melastomataceae) in the Nino Forest, Grecia Reserved Forest, Costa Rica

A study done between July 1986 and May 1987 demonstrated inverse and highly significant correlations between flowering and precipitation and between flowering and temperature in C. xalapensis. Inverse but not significant, and inverse but highly significant relations were found between flowering and precipitation, and between flowering and temperature, respectively, for C. oerstediana. A direct correlation was demonstrated between flowering and solar radiation which was significant for C. oerstedianaand highly significant for C. xalapensis. Budding and leaf fall were continuous during the study in both species, and in C. xalapensis two peaks were observed coinciding with the period of lower precipitation (November-March).
