Phytosociology of montane Chusquea-Quercus forests, Cordillera de Talamanca, Costa Rica
The phytosociology of Chusquea (bamboo)/Quercus forests in the montane belt of the western part of the Cordillera de Talamanca was studied. A total of 22 vegetation relevees were carried out in primary forest, following the vegetation classificationmethod of Braun-Blanquet based on floristic composition. As a result, 4 zonal bamboo/oak communities were defined between 2200 and 3100 m altitude, consisting of 10 plant sociological groups, composed of 190 taxa, of which 107 were phanerogamic. In altitudinal order, descending from the lower limit of the dwarf forest belt, the forest types are the following: the Myrsine pittieri/Quercus costaricensis type; the Q. costaricensis/Q. copeyensis type; the Geonoma hoffmanniana/Q. copeyensis type; and the Q. seemannii/Q. copeyensis type. The structure and physiognomy, floristic composition and syntaxonomy, environmental characteristics and distribution of each type are described, and detailed floristic data are tabulated.
