Synchronized flowering and seed dispersal in Miconia
Six species of Miconia were studied at a single locality in southern Costa Rica. With the exception of M. minutiflora, the species flowered in the drier weather. All the trees of each species bore tiny, white flowers which bloomed synchronously on 1or 2 days. After an interval, a further general flowering occurred. The flowers attracted pollen-gathering bees [not identified] and other small insects. By synchronizing flowering, the trees compensate for the inconspicuousness of the individual florets. Only exceptionally did 2 species flower on the same day.
