Nutrient concentration and retranslocation in coastal vegetation and mangroves from the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica

Samples of mature (green) and senescent (yellow) leaves of nuclear and marginal mangrove vegetation were collected at 5 localities along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Plants included 7 tree species (Rhizophora mangle, R. harrisonii, Avicennia germinans, Pelliciera rhizophorae, Laguncularia racemosa, Conocarpus erectus and Hibiscus tiliaceus), a liana (Phryganocidia phellosperma) and a scandent shrub (Dalbergia brownei). Analyses were made of Ca, Mg, K, Cu, Zn, Mn, N and P. The data are reported and discussed. The concentration of some nutrients (such as N and P) was lower in senescent leaves than in mature photosynthetic leaves, suggesting retranslocation to other plant parts before the leaves fall. Other nutrients, however, increased in some species. There was much variation between samples from the same species.
