Endemic plants of the ancient province of Camagüey, Cuba

The ancient province of Camagüey (now the provinces of Camagüey and Ciego de Avila) in Cuba has undergone heavy anthropogenic change since the XVIII century, which has caused a significant loss of the original ecosystems. This paper presents a list of the phanerogamous endemic plants still existing in the territory; this contains 36 species of herbaceous and woody plants, including palms, shrubs and trees, 9 of which are denoted rare, 2 endangered, and one endangered or extinct. An analysis of some evolutionary aspects and an evaluation of the conservation status of the region is also presented.
