Longevity and variation in the germination percentage of Alnus acuminata Kunth subsp acuminata (Betulaceae)

Variability in the initial germination percentage and the longevity characteristics of seeds of Andean alder (Alnus acuminata Kunth. subsp. acuminata) collected in May and June 1993 in Tucuman province, Argentina, were studied under controlled laboratory conditions. Initial germination varied from 24 to 80 percent (mean 48 percent), with statistically significant differences between individuals. These values are higher than those previously reported for the species. No seeds germinated after 1 yr of storage, and there was a large loss in germination ability between 150 and 220 days after harvesting.
