Season, breed and age influences on production and freezability of dairy goat semen
Base data were collected on semen quality of dairy goats in Southern California. Thirty-four bucks of five breeds representing all ages were included in the data. Semen was collected once weekly from each buck (March 1980 to March 1981) and samples were evaluated, processed (washed) and frozen. Overall means were volume: 1.06 ml, concentration 3.46 x 10 9/ml, initial progressive motility; 59.0 percent, prefreeze motility; 56.3 percent, post-thaw motility; 22.6 percent and motility after 3 hour post-thaw incubation at 37¦C: 12.5 percent. When month of collection was considered, both volume and concentration were greater in the spring (out of breeding season) than in the fall. The relationship between month and ejaculate volume was linear. Initial percentage motility was depressed in the spring and was high in the fall with a period of good motility from April to June. Freezability (low motility loss after freezing) was greatest in December-February and lowest in March-April and August-September. Semen volume was most affected by age with bucks producing an average of 0.42, 0.68 and 1.16 ml at 6, 18 and 30 months, respectively, while concentration averaged 3.28, 3.95 and 3.76 x 10 9/ml for these same age groups. Progressive motility and freezability were less influenced by age than were volume and concentration. For purebred Alpine, La Mancha, Nubian, Saanen and Toggenburg bucks, respective mean values were volume: 0.64, 0.61, 0.80, 1.21, 0.74 ml and concentration: 2.99, 2.36, 3.21, 3.57, 4.17 x 10 9/ml. Motility and freezability were not affected by breed. Large differences in all variables were observed between individual bucks
