Milk and milk replacers as feeds for rearing dairy goats

The aim of this paper was to present recently acquired information about milk feeding of kids in Norway. The main problems of kid rearing are those concerned with the weight gain and health of the kid. The kid should receive colostrum as soon as possible after birth. A suitable physiological environment is also important e.g. correct temperature, dry and draught-free pens and enough bedding. The kidding season in Norway is in January and February. The kids are fed milk replacer (cow milk) twice a day, until weaning at six weeks of age. The recommendation is 0.8-1.0 littre milk replacer per day with a concentration of 175 g powdered milk replacer per littre liquid. Some kid producers feed skim milk or acidified skim milk after six weeks of age. In order to prevent bloat, the optimum age to start feeding concentrates in four weeks. Acidified skim milk powder in milk replacer has a positive effect on weight gain and health during the pre-weaning period for kids
