Coccidiosis of young goats

Coccidian parasitism is common in the caprine species. It may bring about severe pathological disturbances in the young and occasionally, in adults too. We have studied the incidence and the consequences of this parasitic disorder in young animals: 1) using kids reared on artificial milk, exposed to natural infection and submitted to various types of treatments; 2) using animals in metabolic cages and controlled experimental infection. Animals were infected with a mixture of 3 species of Eimeria: E. ninakohlyakimovae, E. christenseni and E. arloingi. The consequences of chronic parasitism were studied by the method of evaluation and by the analysis of some blood components. Our results show that: 1) in the small intestine the mucous layer contained numerous whitish nodules seen to protrude in the light. These nodules were the sites of intense parasitic development and contained essentially gamogonic stages (macrogametes, microgametes and oocysts); 2) the stress due to rearing methods, especially changes in the diet, is an important contributory factor in this illness; 3) the drop in production is more probably related to a drop in food intake than to changes in digestibility, even in animals with multiple lesions. Other observations were a drop of blood albumin and modifications in the ionic composition of plasma
