Studies on parotid saliva in goats

Parotid salivary secretion rate and chemical composition was studied in four parotid cannulated adult Barbari male goats maintained on four different rations: nitrogen requirement for maintenance met by concentrate mixture (T1); 2/3 nitrogen requirement by concentrate mixture and 1/3 by urea (T2); 1/3 nitrogen requirement by concentrate mixture and 2/3 by urea (T4); and 1/3 of nitrogen requirement fed as concentrate mixture (T3). No significant difference in parotid production was observed between T1 and T2 under adequate sodium supplementation. Physical characteristics and buffering capacity of saliva were similar under different rations. Saliva and plasma were isotonic under normal sodium balance. Parotid saliva was poorly buffered at its secretory pH of 8.20. Buffering capacity was good between 6.0 and 6.8; below pH 5.0 it declined sharply. Concentration of total ions was 342.07, 332.11, 332.74, 312.57 meq./l in T1, T2, T3 and T4. Concentration of blood urea-N, saliva total and urea-N, varied with the amount of nitrogen intake. A linear relationship between blood urea-N and saliva urea-N was observed on low nitrogen intake. Parotid salivary nitrogen influx into the rumen was 0.425 and 0.336 g per day in T1 and T2. Salivary urea-N entered the rumen: 0.237 and 0.199 g per day in T1 and T2. Urea supplementation in the diet up to 66 percent of DCP requirement for maintenance in adult Barbari goats did not affect quality and quantity of parotid saliva
