Dairy goat dry matter intake and forage preference as influenced by stage of lactation

Twelve spring freshening Alpine does were offered 18 percent protein alfalfa hay, 9 percent protein timothy hay and a 16 percent protein grain mix free choise during their lactations. Freshening at 27 months in 284 days average lactation yield was 753 kg milk, 3.7 percent butterfat, 28 kg butterfat, 3.5 percent protein and 23 kg protein. Average body weight for the entire lactation was 60 kg. Total dry matter intake peaked at 3.7 kg per doe per day during the fourth month of lactation. Milk production peaked at 3.8 kg per doe per day during the first month of lactation. The does favored alfalfa over timothy except during the first and third months of lactation.
