Argentine interactions between the adjustment program and the agricultural sector

The agricultural sector, accounts for 15 percent of Argentine GDP (36 percent if agroindustry is included) and its participation in total exports, reaches 64 percent. The agricultural sector, plays a dual role in the Argentine economy: it is the main source of foreign exchange, and it supplies most of food and fibers consumed domestically. The inflationary process that characterized the Argentine economy for a long time reached in the first semester of 1985 a level which made indispensable the implementation of an adjustment and stabilization program. The starting of this Program, known as Plan Austral, ocurred at the same time as the international grain crisis. During the first period of the Plan, macroeconomic decisions were taken assuming an ineslastic supply of agricultural products. The interaction between these two circunstances was responsable for a significant decline in the volume and value of agricultural exports, which in turn affected negatively the Plan Austral.
