Silviculture in Latin America and the role of research in future development

Latin American extends from 30{eth}N in Mexico to 55{eth}S in Chile and includes 33 countries in various stages of development reflecting history, politics and geography. Some of these countries have a strong forest sector fuelled by the private sector, but silviculture in most of these countries is restricted to demonstrations and pilot plantations. Forest research has been the vehicle for silviculture development in several countries where forestry plays an important role in the national economy. Unfortunately, forest research does not receive the attention it merits as a mechanism to promote forest production. Creation and strengthening of national silviculture research institutions should be a priority
