Dos casos de la adopción de sistemas de plantar árboles en fincas en América Central
This article presents results of recent studies of the adoption of on-farm tree plantings, one on the Pacific coast of Guatemala and the other in an agricultural community near the capital city of Costa Rica. Both studies used interviews of participants and non-participants carrying out regression and logistical analysis of factors influencing the decision of farmers to engage in tree planting programs. The studies found that: a) area planted was positively related to total farm area; b) in Costa Rica, the most common land use replaced by tree plantings were pastures; c) in Guatemala minimal subsidies for resource poor farmers were often required although the systems were financially profitable; d) perception financial profitability was one of the most important, if not the most important consideration in engaging in on-farm tree planting; and e) technical assistance and farm visits had a significant impact on the decision to plant trees on farm.
