Caracterización y selección preliminar de árboles de la colección de zapote (Pouteria sapota) del CATIE

The systematic characterization process, allows to determine the collections' variation and to select the most appropriate genotypes for culture. The following objectives were established for this study: to characterize zapote accessions based on agronomical, morphological and quality characters and also on the characterization and preliminar selection of outstanding genotypes. According to the conglomerades analysis, six groups were formed with the 63 trees evaluated. The characterization results indicate that there is an important genetic variability in the population under study. In this population 9 valuable trees were identified regarding quality which could be utilized in future genetic improvement programs.
