Patrones en el espacio y el tiempo de la biodiversidad vegetal en bosques secundarios e intervenidos del noreste de Costa Rica :

Spatial and temporal patterns of plant biodiversity in secondary and disturbed forests of northeastern Costa Rica. Mature forest managed for timber production in northeastern Costa Rica showed plant species richness similar to that of pristine forest, but 15-30 yr old secondary forests only ca. 50 percent of that richness. Many species are rare in both forest types though secondary forests have more very common species than managed mature. Both forest types show considerable stand turnover in the first years of recovery following disturbance, the presence of pioneer species at a given site is ephemeral and species richness may increase rapidly. When long-lived species assume dominance post-disturbance, however, a long period of relative stagnation in plant community development may ensue. Silvicultural manipulation during this period could increase the rate at which plant biodiversity increases.
