Comercialización de productos no maderables del bosque en comunidades de frontera agrícola caso: el xate en Petén

Xate continues to be a non-timber forest product of major economic and social importance for the non-indigenous farmers in the region of Peten, Guatemala. Market research on xate reveals a strong dependence on intermediaries, a low level of organization among collectors, and a lack of information at the farmer's level about market conditions. The activity is considered intensive and yet wasteful; the exportation selection process refuses more than 50 percent of the harvested leaves. The exporter receives approximately 7.4 times the price paid to the collector. In addition to other factors, there is a lack of specific legislation with respect to management and commercialization of xate.
