Diseño y aplicación de un inventario forestal diversificado (productos maderables y no maderables) en Petén

Timber and non-timber products have been traditionally extracted from the forest in Peten, Guatemala. Nonetheless, that extraction has not taken into account sustainability principles. An adequate management of forest resources must be based on a real knowledge of its growing stock; therefore a methodology for designing an inventory to assess commercial timber and non-timber resources was developed. For non-timber species, the model determines not only the number of individuals, but also the product stocks, within an acceptable level of error. An inventory in San Miguel, Peten, based on the proposed design, showed its applicability, with a slightly higher costs than a conventional timber inventory.
