Le dolique tubereux (Pachyrhizus erosus Urban): un nouveau legume pour les Antilles

Mexican yam bean, Pachyrhizus erosus Urban, dolique tubéreux in French, jicama in Spanish, sankalu in hindi, locally named pois-manioc or pois-patate in Guadeloupe and Martinique, produces like sweet potato, yam or cassava, a fleshy tuberous root. But it possesses the advantages of Leguminosae: multiplication by seeds; self-supply in nitrogen, thanks to biological nitrogen fixation; soil enrichment in nitrogen compounds. Furthermore, Yam bean tuberous root is one of the rare tubers which can be eaten raw or cooked, in human or animal diet. Tuber yield can reach 80 or 90 tons per hectare. Yam bean is a promising crop to be taken into account in a program of diversification of tropical tubers.
