Les cicadelles vectrices de viroses du mais a l'Ile de La Reunion. Etude preliminaire

Maize crop is not important in Reunion Island but it offers interesting potentialities and a wide breeding program is starting. Virus resistance is one of the breeding criterions and our work is a preliminary study for that target. They exist three maize viruses transmitted by Auchenorrhynqua. The Maize Mosaic Virus and the Maize Stripe Virus are transmitted by the planthopper Peregrinus maidis (ASHMEAD) and the Maize Streak Virus is transmitted by the leafhopper Cicadulina mbila (NAUDE). From april 1983 to september 1984 we studied the vector-virus relations in the natural conditions. We observed the vectors populations dynamics and the accompagnying courses of virus diseases. The studies took place on a sequence of experimental plots representative for one ecological environment. They appeared two patterns of infestation : the settling of P. maidis a sedentary insect closed linked to maize and on the other hand the irregular appearance of C. mbila a very quick insect wich investigated for the maize and the wild grasses. The diseases importance did not look as bound to the vectors densities but would be dependant of the inoculum stock supplied by the former crop. The study of viruliferous insects percentages in the both populations shows a difference between the vector abilities. In our experimental conditions this percentage does not exceed 20 p.cent for P. maidis. It is worth about 6O p.cent for C. mbila. At least some data about the vectors biology, their mobility and their survival abilities permit to explain the vectors dynamics and to prepare the mass rearing of viruliferous insects for subsequent controlled inoculations.
