The Newcastle disease in captive rheas ( Rhea americana)

Newcastle disease virus was isolated from rheas (Rhea americana) in captivity for the first time. The occurrence of the virus was determined by isolation of chick embryo, HA and HI tests were performed and reproduction of the disease in chicks was also examined.

Foi descrito pela primeira vez um foco da doença de Newcastle em emas (Rhea americana, Rheidae, Ratita), mantidas em cativeiro no Jardim Zoológico de Brasília. A doença foi diagnosticada pelo quadro anátomo e histopatológico, isolamento do vírus em ovos embrionados de galinha, testes de emaglutinação e inibição da hemaglutinação. Foi, ainda, reproduzida em pintos de uma semana de idade, dos quais o vírus foi reisolado. Em frangos vacinados com vacina comercial contra a doença de Newcastle, preparada com amostra La Sota, não foi possível reproduzir a doença, o que comprovou, ainda mais, a identidade do vírus.
