Behavior of soybean genotypes under soil conditions with high aluminum saturation

Two experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions to evaluate the aluminum tolerance of soybean genotypes. The evaluation was based on the root growth in soil layers with different levels of Al saturation. Pots prepared by superimposing four 10 cm height rings of 10 cm diameter ''PVC'' tubes received layers of soil with different levels of liming, forming a gradient with zero, 17.2, 46.5 e 73.5% of aluminum saturation. In other treatment, all the soil in the pot was limed. All the pots, in both treatments, had the 10 cm upper layer fertilized. In a second experiment, the behavior of a genotype of soybean and other of sorghum, both supposedly aluminum sensitive was compared. The procedure used was not adequate to identify genotypic differences once, even the supposed nontolerant genotypes grew root into the soil layer with high aluminum saturation. The soybean genotypes showed to be more aluminum tolerant than the sorghum genotype when the root growth in high Al soil layer is considered.
