Unstable planar one-dimensional configurations in nematic liquid crystals
In this work it is analytically shown that any one-dimensional non-uniform planar configuration is unstable with relation to out-of-plane tilts. The fluctuations describing this escape into the third dimension are studied, and it is shown that the minimization of the bulk free energy makes non-null the mean values of the parameters describing these uctuations. The equations describing this phenomenon are proposed and solved in the small bending approximation.
