In vivo carcass evaluation and body measurements of Dorper ewe in different age groups
The aim of this study was to correlate the morphometric and carcass characteristics in vivo in Dorper pure of origin ewes in different age groups. We estimated the body condition score (EC), body measurements and analyzed the carcasses by ultrasound of 39 ewes. The data were investigated for normal distribution of the traits and comparison of the means and were submitted to analysis of variance using the effects of age (group G1: 1,4 ≤ 2 years and group G2: 2 < years old ≤ 5,5) and were calculated the correlations between the characteristics. The group G2 presented higher values of EC (3.54±0.65), height at the withers (AC) (61,21 ± 4,05 cm), height at the rump (AG) (62.27±2.68 cm), thoracic perimeter (PT) (95.67±6.75 cm), body length (CC) (75,12±6,52), loin eye area (AOL) (13.50±1.83 cm²), width of the L. dorsi muscle (LARG) (5.54±0.62 cm), depth of the L. dorsi muscle (PROF) (2.98±0.48 cm) and subcutaneous fat thickness (EG) (0.51±0.19 cm), than group G1. The characteristics EC, PT, CC, AOL, LARG, PROF, EG and the ratio between width and depth of L. dorsi (MUSC) showed significant P values (<.05), however the characteristics AC and AG didn’t present significant values. Age and EC showed moderate correlations with each other (0.24). Moderate to high pairwise correlations were found between AC, AG, and PT (0.56 to 0.72) (p<0.01). and between AOL, PROF, LARG, MUSC and EG (-0.49 to 0.71) (p<0.01). PT showed a moderate and significant correlation with the measurements of AOL (0.54) (p<0.01), PROF (0.61) (p<0.05) and EG (0.49) (p<0.01). The results showed the possibility of using MUSC for selection of sheep with greater muscularity and PT as selection of sheep with good carcass conformation for in vivo evaluation without using ultrasound.

The results showed the possibility of using MUSC for selection of sheep with greater muscularity and PT as selection of sheep with good carcass conformation for in vivo evaluation without using ultrasound.
