Innovation in in-service education and training of teachers: France

Report on the position of inservice teacher education and teacher improvement in France in the early 1970's, with case studies on: the programme for inservice education of primary school teachers, the Maurice Baquet course on teaching physical education and sport, inservice courses for first level secondary school teachers, and a training course for teachers in social psychology - In spite of the modernization of the education system initiated in 1975, the educational aims and methods of inservice teacher training are the subject of deep controversy both among politicians and among teachers themselves, hence inservice education provision has no consistent pattern. Some 30 percent of teachers, however, take part in either compulsory or optional inservice training each year and several innovative inservice training projects have been launched. The shortage of mathematics teachers and the difficulties experienced by existing mathematics teachers in coping with modern mathematics led to the setting up of 16 institutes covering both the continuing education of teachers and research and experiment on teaching. An experiment was also made with work experience programmes for teachers in business and industry. The Maurice Baquet course used an action-research approach, and the training for secondary school teachers was based on group instruction.
