Often such research has neglected the role of the peculiar composition of humic substances (HS) in SOM resilience. In the present communication, we intended to justify and underline the importance of HS structure as a source of biogeochemical proxies for C stabilization and its causal connection with C residence time in the soil ecosystem. Three important empiric and experimental issues were considered: (1) molecular-level analysis of SOM evidencing its biogeochemical stability in connection to its chaotic three-dimensional structure not readily amenable to enzymatic degradation, (2) structural laboratory transformations of model HS exerting a measurable effect on their biodegradability and (3) empirical approaches based on multivariate data treatments taking advantage from the natural variability of the SOM, betraying significant local patterns of structural humic resilience proxies.
