Valdés, Alex Vaz-Canosa, Pablo Ropert-Coudert, Yan Kato, Akiko Soutullo, Álvaro 11th International Penguin Conference, 4-9 September 2023, Viña del Mar, Chile Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) undertake long-distance migrations during winter. This period includes the molt phase and is crucial for juvenile and adult survival and subsequent breeding success. Adélie penguin population declines in one of the most rapidly warming places in the Southern Hemisphere have been linked to the reduction of total biomass and size of available Antarctic krill. Since 2021, we are studying winter migration and isotopic niche of individuals breeding in a declining colony in King George/25 de Mayo Island, Western Antarctic Peninsula. Every year, we tracked penguins’ movement using geolocators (GLS) attached to the legs, and collected body feathers for Carbon and Nitrogen stable isotope analysis. Preliminary results revealed migration routes across the Bransfield Strait, north of the Antarctic Peninsula, and the Wedell and Scotia Seas, encompassing three different CCAMLR management subareas. Penguins depend on resources available in subarea 48.5 during the post-breeding and molting stage, and resources distributed across subareas 48.1, 48.2 and 48.5 during the winter. We identified differential use of areas between years and estimated distances covered by penguins. δ13C and δ15N isotopic values obtained in body feathers reflect enrichment in pre-moult locations, where penguins replenish fat reserves before undergoing a catastrophic molt process. Areas used immediately before and after molting represent key areas for individual survival, but are not currently considered within current MPAs proposals. Adélie penguins’ dependence on resources from different subareas throughout the year emphasizes the need to incorporate the temporal dimension of resources utilization when designing conservation measures for this region Peer reviewed 2024-09-02T09:04:20Z 2024-09-02T09:04:20Z 2023-09-04 póster de congreso 11 International Penguin Conference (2023) http://hdl.handle.net/10261/366803 en Sí none
