Thus, they are among the most impacted marine environments by anthropogenic pressures, such as high population density and intensive human activity, that produce an excess of nutrients delivered to coastal waters. Consequently, phytoplanktonic growth is enhanced, increasing chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) and initiating the eutrophication process, that reduces water quality. In the Mediterranean Sea, its low tidal range (20-40 cm) makes difficult for continental inflows to dilute, which helps to maintain the eutrophication as a threat for coastal waters. European policies, such as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD; 2000/60/EC) and the Water Framework Directive (WFD; 2000/60/EC), aim to restore and protect coastal waters.
