Sample areas were chosen spanning a wide range in sediment conditions and waste inputs. Heavy metals were associated with organic matter present in the sediment. Covariance analyses showed that the expected relationship between organic matter content and the enzymatic activities of coastal benthic bacterial communities was altered due to the effect of heavy metals. Laboratory experiments showed the inhibitory effect of heavy metals on exoenzymatic bacterial activities. Thus, although more substrate was potentially available to heterotrophs, enzymatic degradation of organic matter was negatively affected because of the inhibitory effect of the heavy metals. A direct result of this perturbation is that the turnover of polymeric compounds is much slower in polluted areas [ES] Se estudió el efecto de los metales pesados sobre las actividades exoenzimáticas (a-glucosidasa y exoproteolítica) en sedimentos de la costa catalana (NE de España). Se escogieron áreas de muestreo que abarcaban un amplio rango de condiciones del sedimento y de vertidos. Los metales pesados estaban asociados a la materia orgánica presente en el sedimento. Los análisis de la covarianza mostraron que la esperada relación entre el contenido en materia orgánica y las actividades enzimáticas de las comunidades de bacterias bentónicas costeras estaba alterada debido al efecto de los metales pesados. Experimentos de laboratorio pusieron de manifiesto el efecto inhibidor de los metales pesados sobre las actividades bacterianas exoenzimáticas. Así, aunque existía más substrato potencialmente disponible para los heterótrofos, la degradación enzimática de la materia orgánica estaba negativamente afectada a causa del efecto inhibidor de los metales pesados.
