However, its effects on sediment resuspension and dispersal across continental margins and on the alteration of seafloor morphology still remain unaddressed. A focused study was conducted in La Fonera (Palamós) submarine canyon, where a bottom trawling fishing fleet operates on a daily basis, mainly at depths from 400 to 800 m. To assess the effects of trawling on the sedimentary dynamics, a moored line equipped with a downward-looking ADCP and several turbidimeters was deployed within a tributary valley on the canyon flank, slightly deeper than the maximum trawling depth. Time series revealed a nearly daily occurrence of sediment gravity flows linked to the passage of the trawling fleet. Increases of near-bottom suspended sediment concentrations and current velocities were observed repeatedly during weekdays at working hours, indicating a periodic sediment removal from fishing grounds. Such sediment dispersal propagates deeper, altering natural sediment accumulation rates along the main canyon axis. Additionally, a high-resolution multibeam bathymetry form the upper canyon was combined with the Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) positions obtained from local trawlers, evidencing a noticeable smoothing of bottom topography in the canyon flank regions affected by bottom trawling. Sediment coring and direct ROV inspections on both trawled and untrawled canyon flank sections also revealed a dramatic change of the original sediment properties and small-scale morphological complexity. These findings suggest that during the last decades following the industrialization of fishing fleets, bottom trawling has become an important driver altering the sedimentary dynamics and the deep seascape evolution, particularly in relatively steep continental slope environments, such as those found in large portions of the flanks of submarine canyons Peer Reviewed 2014-10-27 2016-01-13T10:22:23Z comunicación de congreso http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_5794 Résumés de la 24e Réunion des Sciences de la Terre.
