Lavandula luisieri (Rozeira) Riv.-Mart (Lamiaceae) is a small aromatic shrub endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. Previous studies have shown that L. luisieri essential oil and hexanic extract contains monoterpenes with necrodane skeleton. These compounds have showed great interest by their nematicidal, phytotoxic, antibacterial and antifungal properties. In this work, we report the biotransformation of two natural necrodane (1, 2) by filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger to study their structure-activity relationship as potential biopesticides. A. niger is a well-known fungus that contain numerous enzymes with broad specificities, able to which catalyze regio- and stereoselective reactions (hydroxylations, oxidations, reductions, etc.) of nonactivated carbons on a variety of natural and synthetic organic compounds. The microbial transformation of 3,4,5,5-tetramethylcyclopenta-1,3-diene-1-carboxylic acid (1) and 2,3,4,4-tetramethyl-5-methylenecyclopent-2-en-1-one (2) was carried out at 30ºC in a shaken culture during 3 days with a final concentration of 0.2 mg/mL. Compounds obtained were analyzed by GC-MS and NMR spectroscopy. The microbiological transformation of compound 1 led the formation of two hydroxymethyl derivatives (1a and 1b). The main biotransformation of compound 2 was the reduction of 5,6-double bond, followed by the oxidation of C-7 to give the corresponding hydroxylated derivative (2b). The comparative insect antifeedant effects and phytotoxic activity of metabolites obtained and acetyl derivatives (1c, 2c) of major compounds will be discussed.
