García Porta, Joan Metallinou, Margarita Simón, Marc Fasola, Mauro Pupin, Fabio Sindaco, Roberto Trabajo presentado en el I Congreso Ibérico de Sistemática Animal (CISA2012), celebrado en Madrid del 17 al 19 de enero de 2012. The Socotra Archipelago, in the northwest Indian Ocean, is considered one of the most remote and most biodiversity rich archipelagoes in the world. Often referred to as the “Galapagos of the Indian Ocean”, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Natural site in 2008. Despite having a very rich and unique fauna and flora with a high level of endemicity at both species and generic levels, the taxonomy of most of the groups is still not clear and their origin and evolution remains unknown. Reptiles constitute the most relevant vertebrate fauna of the Socotra Archipelago, with 90% of the 30 species and 45% of the 12 genera being found nowhere else in the World. Although they have been studied in some occasions, our understanding of most reptile groups is far from complete. Some of the most important outstanding issues are to understand when and how the islands were colonized as well as the conservation status, i.e. diversity and genetic structure, of its endemic fauna. In this talk I will present the results of the collaborative project carried out by our research team at the IBE and our Italian collaborators, which started in 2010, and that has already produced some interesting and unexpected results that highlight the relevance of this isolated archipelago.
