Contrary to the wealth of information regarding water requirements (ET) of the major herbaceous crops, the ET of tree crops such as olives has been less studied. We present here two approaches to determining olive ETc. One follows the traditional crop coefficient approach, while the other uses a model to partition the ET into its two components, E and T. Olive ETc estimates are needed to schedule irrigation using the water budget approach, a robust and simple method that is described here. The uncertainties involving the water budget components of an olive orchard are explored, in particular the one related to the capacity of the tree to extract water from the potential root zone.
