Reaction of banana clones against the major biotic stresses.
An experiment was conducted at Kannara during 1990-93, to assess the incidence of major pests and diseases on banana [Musa] clones. The pests and diseases studied were rhizome weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus), sigatoka leaf spot (Mycosphaerella musicola), banana bunchy top nanavirus and banana nematode (Radopholus similis). Eighty-seven clones representing various genomic groups, viz. AA (7), AB (7), AAA (18), AAB (27) and ABB (28), were screened under natural local conditions. Amongst the AA clones,Sannachenkadali was tolerant of rhizome weevil, sigatoka leaf spot and banana bunchy top nanavirus. In the AB group, Njalipoovan, Kunnan and Poomkalli were resistant to all of the pests and diseases studied. AAA clone Manoranjitham was highly resistant to leaf spot disease and AAB clone Mysore poovan was highly tolerant of rhizome weevil attack. Clones such as Thiruvananthapuram, Mysore ethan and Padalimoongil showed moderate multiple resistance to rhizome weevil, sigatoka leaf spot and banana nematode. In the ABB genomic group, Jamani was tolerant of all the pests and diseases studied. Malaimonthan and Peykunnan were moderately resistant to rhizome weevil, banana nematode and sigatoka leaf spot.
