HIV/AIDS and food crises in Southern Africa: An agenda for action research and for learning how to respond
How does HIV/AIDS interact with other factors underlying the current food crises in southern Africa? And what does this imply for the type of responses that are required – both short- and long-term? In this paper we first identify three principal obstacles to effective action before highlighting an approach to addressing them. The key objectives of strengthening resistance and resilience at different levels and the utility of an HIV/AIDS lens are described. We conclude by briefly describing an a ction research/capacity development process that is underway in southern Africa – the RENEWAL initiative – which aims to foster a better understanding of these dynamic interactions to thus enable more effective responses and to promote convergence between humanitarian and development thinkers and practitioners facing similar challenges.
