Inventory, genetic characterisation and valorisation of domestic and wild animal biodiversity in the Annamitic Cordillera of Vietnam (BIODIVA project)

Inventory and characterisation of domestic and wild animal biodiversity with valorization and protection objectives are important stakes for a sustainable development. For the local communities, genetic diversity allows quick responses to environmental changes. It also permits improvement and diversification of animal productions respecting cultural traditions. In Vietnam, due to several geographical and historical reasons, the mountains areas have conserved an exceptional diversity of domestic and wild animal species. Conscious of this richness, the Vietnamese government decided, in the frame of Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP), to concentrate its effort on characterization, conservation and valorization of domestic and wild animal genetic resources of economical or patrimonial interest. This BIODIVA project elaborated by a consortium of public institutes - CIRAD and INRA for the French part and NIAH and NCNST for the Vietnamese-amplifies and coordinates initiatives and actions that have been in progress for several years. It includes several complementary components focused on the development of operational competences of institutions in charge of biodiversity conservation,the support of local and territorial communities involved in conservation / development actions and on fundamental inventories and characterizations. Communication events on work results will complete this device. On the field, BIODIVA will develop pilot actions in partnership management with local authorities and communities of 4 provinces in centre and northern parts of Vietnam (Dac Lac, Ha Tinh, Nghe An and Ha Giang).
