IEMVT at the service of veterinary medicine and stock-keeping

L'Institut d'Elevage et de Medecine Veterinaire des pays Tropicaux (the Institute of Tropical Veterinary Medicine and Stock-keeping) IEMVT, France has an information department to collect and disseminate scientific and technical documentation on the subject of stock- breeding and rearing: in tropical and equatorial Africa, South America and Asia. The documentation centre and publishing service are at the disposal of all those involved in this field - research workers specialists, teachers and students both from France and from other countries. A specialist collection A specialist collection of documents includes works on breeding and rearing, nutrition, milk production, pasturage and animal pathology. It contains more than 12,000 books, 3000 reports, 7000 theses, a thousand or so periodicals and 1200 microfiches. There is a postal documentation request service for scientific articles, reports, bibliographies, etc. The photographic library contains 13,000 black and white photos and 16,000 colour slides. For example, a series of 78 colour slides on the principal domestic species found in the inter- tropical zone, together with a brief commentary, is currently available. Documentation service At presentall IEMVT references are being put on a computerised database common to the corresponding departments at CIRAD and AGROVOC. More than 1500 documentary units are already available, as well as 270 references to research publications. There is a permanent question and answer service for IEMVT scientists and correspondents both in France and abroad. Bibliographies and documentary research will be furnished on request. IEMVT cooperates in the production of several bulletins. IEMVT provides references, analyses, and news for the 'Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Information Quarterly (I1IQ)' published in English and French. It also participates in the International Information System on Agricultural Sciences and Technology by passing on references on published works. Finally, IEMVT literature also appears in AGRITRQP, CIRAD's analytical documentation review, which comes out quarterly in French, English and Spanish and covers topics concerning agriculture, forests and tropical animal production. Publications 'The Tropical Stock-Rearing and Veterinary Medicine Review' (Revue d'Elevage et de Medecine Veterinaire des Pays Tropicaux) appears quarterly and publishes original research technical and economic papers by IEMVT research scientists, and also by authors from other organizations, worldwide. This review covers subjects of high scientific interest and value but always addresses their potential practical application. 'IEMVT Studies and Reviews' was launched to ensure that specialist research work is disseminated to those working in the diverse fields of pathology, breeding and rearing, botany, or even in relevant historic or linguistic studies.
