A rapid method for estimating leaf area index on oil palm.

A rapid method for estimating leaf area index using a LiCor LAI2000 Plant Canopy Analyser (PCA) gave good results which compared well with the traditional method in which direct measurements are made on a sample of leaflets usually taken from a leaf of rank 17 and employing an established formula to calculate the total area. It was important to use 2 data loggers and 2 optical sensors to simultaneously measure diffuse radiation above and below the canopy. This technique is appropriate for use on species such as oil palm which can reach substantial heights within a few years and also in humid tropical regions with a high daily likelihood of uniform cloud cover throughout the year.
