Comparative Studies of sulfosate and glyphasate.

The close structural similarity between sulfosate and glyphosate makes a comparative evaluation of their effectiveness difficult both in glasshouse and field experiments. In 3 pot experiments on lalang (Imperata cylindrica), sulfosate was equal in effectiveness to glyphosate, and in one study was superior. Analysis of leaf chlorophyll content showed significantly lower levels during the first 2 weeks in all sulfosate-treated plants. This reduction was concn-dependent, and was reflected in reduced biomass production and regrowth potential in 1 of 4 studies conducted. The response in chlorophyll levels clearly indicated an early or more rapid initial uptake and activity, and that the effect of sulfosate was different from glyphosate. Sulfosate also showed a higher degree of effectiveness when ca. 4 mm of rain fell within the first 2 h of spraying, with sulfosate-treated plants having lower fresh weights at 5 weeks after treatment and less regrowth compared to glyphosate-treated plants. In certain situations, the faster action could offer some degree of rainfastness and a better level of control in favour of sulfosate.
