Recent studies on white-lipped peccary and collared peccary in the neotropics

In this chapter we synthesize the published information of almost 100 papers of scientific journals, books and other sources on the collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) and the white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari) in the Neotropical region. Studies in the Neotropical region include among the different techniques: the direct observation, the counting of tracks and the use the of camera-traps. Studies of pec caries include diverse topics as population estimation, group size, modeling distri bution and abundance, social behavior, home range and habitat use, diet and foraging patterns, predation, competitive interactions, genetics, physiology, parasites, ecosystem engineering, subsistence hunting and conservation. However, the continuous increase in fragmentation and hunting pressure observed in all Neotropical forests make it urgent to monitor populations of peccary species all over its range.
