This report consists of 2 parts. The first, a review, covers the history and cultivation of arabica coffee in Ethiopia; theoretical aspects of resistance; and the symptoms, ecology and control (chemical and through crop resistance) of coffee berry disease, caused by Colletotrichum coffeanum (Glomerella cingulata). The second part of the report presents results of laboratory and field studies on coffee breeding and selection for resistance to C. coffeanum, and on host susceptibility to leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix), leaf blight (Phoma tarda), blotch leaf miners (Leucoptera caffeina and L. meyricki) and brown eye spot (Cercospora coffeicola)
