Rapport

Vertical and horizontal resistance is defined. The origins of arabica coffee in relation to coffee berry disease are discussed and the erosion of horizontal resistance to CBD is described. A crash programme in Etiophia will produce not less than 50 new, CBD-resistant varieties in not more than seven years; each variety will consist of a least 1.000 trees bearing seed by 1979. Each variety will also be throughly tested for resistance, yield, quality and homozygosity. The necessity to replant CBD-susceptible coffee will be exploited for the modernisation of centuries-old cultivation methods. It is postulated that a similar approach to the problem of leaf rust will be more difficult but nevertheless feasible
