Improvement began in El Salvador in 1949 with individual selection of high-yielding and regularly bearing trees within a population of the variety Bourbon. Similar work was begun in 1973 using Pacas. Intervarietal hybrids have been developed since 1956: several, notably Pacas X Maragogipe, are still being tested.
