Introducing Ruiru 11 to the estates

This paper discusses the attitude of the estates towards the new hybrid recently developed by Coffee Research Foundation (CRF), called Ruiru 11. A survey carried out in November-December 1984 indicated that most estates are interested in experimenting with Ruiru 11 on a new piece of land, but some prefer to interplant the hybrid in the old coffee stand. The estate managers indicate that they prefer to plant the hybrid at a higher density. Many estate managers indicate they would like to start a trial as soon as possible, thus creating a high initial demand which is likely to exceed the supply of seeds and seedlings. Half of the estates will have to rely on the commercial nurseries. After about 5 years of observation the estates will determine whether they consider it worthwhile to replace the old coffee. Replacements will be effected in a slow pace, to be finalized in 15-20 years or more. Once replaced it is very likely the entire coffee production of the estates will increase considerably, something which might not be so desirable given the limited quota Kenya is being allocated
