Determination of lime and fertilizer requirements for cocoa based on soil analysis
Cocoa is sensitive to unfavorable soil fertility conditions such as acid soil with high degree of Al saturation, nutrient deficiency and cation imbalance. These chemical properties generally act as limiting factor for cocoa growth and production in most part of cocoa areas in North Sumatera. Soil analysis is used as basic consideration for liming and fertilizer recommendation. Liming as calcite or dolomite should be applied to increase soil productivity of cocoa area having soil pH of < 5.0 and Al saturation of > 30 percent. The optimum liming dosage is equal to 1.5 exchangeable Al. Manuring recommendation in mature cocoa is stressed on soil fertility correction, especially to raise soil nutrient content to the sufficient level and nutrient balance for cocoa growth. The calculation of manuring input is based on the difference between optimum and actual soil nutrient content. This soil nutrient correction is required to achieve high cocoa yield.
