Observations on trunk necrosis of cocoa trees in Venezuela caused by Ceratostomella fimbriata

This is a description of tests on the etiology and pathogenicity of the fungus Ceratostomella fimbriata, the causal agent of trunk necrosis of cocoa. The disease attacks any part of the tree, but more particularly the fork. Young trees are more sensitive than adults. The disease makes most rapid advances in healthy trees with smooth trunks. The types genetically closest to "Criollo" are the most seriously affected. The "Forasteros" of Barlovento and Trinidad suffer least. Fungicides are generally ineffective against the disease, and the spores are not killed when an aqueous solution of spores is mixed with a fungicide solution in the normal concentrations. The means by which the disease is propagated have been examined and the study concludes with suggestions for control methods which might well be used with success.
