Cacao rehabilitation in Nigeria

A sizeable portion of the cacao growing areas of Nigeria contains old cacao trees which contribute substantially to the total annual cocoa production. Apart from depletion of soil fertility, old age and poor management, a combined effect of capsid and swollen shoot virus attack has depressed yield seriously; especially in the Areas of Mass Infection. The different methods of rehabilitation and problems encountered are discussed. Availability of sufficient funds appears to be the greatest single factor militating against large scale cacao rehabilitation
