Control of black pod disease of cocoa in Trinidad; preliminary report

Black pod disease caused by the fungus Phytophthora palmivora is the most serious field disease of cocoa in Trinidad and Tobago. In field trials conducted in Trinidad on three occasions with average annual rainfall of 100, it was shown that by 3-weekly spraying with a copper fungicide - Cupric hydroxide 86 per cent - (Kocide 101) at the rate of 2 lb Kocide 101 in 25 gallons of water per acre, losses from black pod disease were reduced to 15 per cent in the sprayed plots as compared to 42 per cent losses in the unsprayed (control) plot. The results also showed that there was an average increase of 82 per cent in the number of good healthy pods reaped, and an average increase of 150 per cent in pounds of wet cocoa beans obtained in the sprayed plots as compared to the unsprayed (control) plots
