Cocoa and soils in the state of Sabah, Malaysia

In Sabah on trial plots, a few small holdings and estates, cocoa has been planted on a variety of soils, derived from different parent materials. Cocoa grows well on recent riverine alluvium, and in one area on soil derived from quaternary basalt lava. It does moderately well on another soil derived from quaternary basalt lava (older than the first), a fine textured lake bed alluvium and a rendzina derived mainly from coral but with an admixture of igneous material. It does poorly on the rest which include a moderately fertile fine textured soil derived from mudstone or tuffite, which is predominantly montmorillonite, and a variety of fine textured, leached soils of low pH, derived from a variety of parent materials including volcanic ashes, intrusive igneous and sedimentary materials. Associated with the poor growth of cocoa on unsuitable soils is a physiological disorder which causes chlorosis and necrosis of leaves, premature leaf fall and a certain amount of die-back. Unknown edaphic factors are the main cause of this disorder
